SHIRLEY is a parish and village distant 4½ miles from Ashbourn, south division of the county, hundred of Appletree, union and county court district of Ashbourn, diocese of Lichfield, archdeaconry of Derby, and rural deanery of Cubley. The church is dedicated to St Michael.The living is a vicarage, annual value £200, with residence, in the gift of Earl Ferrers. The Rev. Eardley Wilmot Michell, B.C.L., is the vicar. There is a chapel for the Wesleyan Methodists. There is also a National school for boys and girls, Miss Hannah Massey mistress. The parish contains 1582 acres of land, of which the chief owners are the Trustees of the late Dr Shirley, and Francis Wright, Esq. The population is about 270. The lord of the manor is Earl Ferrers.
