SHIRLEY is a township, parish and village, 4½ miles south-east from Ashbourne, and 10 north-west from Derby, in Appletree Hundred, and Union of Ashbourne, The church of St. Michael is a handsome building; in 1842 it was repaired, at an expense of about £600. The living is in the diocese of Licbfield and archdeaconry of Derby, and the gift of Earl Ferrers; the Rev. Eardley Wilmot Micbell, B.C.L., is the vicar and incumbent; value £150 per annum by commutation. A National school was erected in the village, in 1844, by subscription, aided by a parliamentary grant. Here is a Primitive Methodist chapel, and several small charities. Acreage, with Yeaveley, 3,560; population of Shirley, 387.
