Pigot's Directory - 1842
Brailsford, Langley, Shirley and Longford are all under the same heading. Just the text relevant to Shirley is reproduced here.SHIRLEY, with the townships of Stydd and Yeaveley, form a parish in the same hundred as Brailsford, about three miles w. from that village. The habitations are so scattered over the parish, that the features of a village cannot be recognized. The church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a small building, with a tower of wood. Shirley park, in this parish, occupies upwards of two hundred acres, and at one time was a noted cover for foxes. The parish contained, in 1831, 602 inhabitants, and at the last census (1841) 682.
