In 1891 (aged 6) he was a scholar at Worlds Ford, Synerscote. By 1901 he was a Labourer at a paper mill.
He joined 64 Company Royal Garrison Artillary around 1910 where he was a sergeant major according to the scroll in the church. He saw service in Arabia, Cyprus and Gibralta
He was awarded the British War Medal, Victory Medal and the DCA* MM (1918).

He died at Cheadle, Staffs
