Son of James, an estate labourer and Louisa Ann (née Glover). Married 11 Jun 1895. Brother to Edith (b. 1896), Fanny (b. 1908), Frank (b. 1905), Louise (b. 1910) and Walter (b. 1899).He was educated at Shirley National School (12 Mar 1901 – 6 Feb 1910) achieving Level 2. During that time he was living at Shirley Common moving to Yeldersley in 1911 where he was a cowman.
