There were a priest and a church here at so early a period as the Norman conquest– The living is a vicarage; and the church is dedicated to St Michael. It formerly belonged to the monastery at Derly. Its clear value is 35l and yearly tenths 13s 4d. The Rev Mr Gardiner is the patron.
At Shirley stood a few years ago the ancient seat of the family of Shirley; but now it is entirely taken down and scarcely a vestige of it is to be seen.
The ancient name of the family was Etendon but in the reign of Henry III it assumed that of Shirley. At this time James Shirley had free warren granted him in all his demesne land at Shirley in Derbyshire. In the eighth year of Edward IV the manor was held by Ralph Shirley under Duke Clarence of Tutbury. It continued in the possession of the same family till the time of the late lord Ferrers when the farms of which it consisted were disposed of separately.
