THE FUNERAL OF THE LATE BISHOP OF SODOR AND MAN.
The remains of the lamented Prelate were brought to Derby from the Isle of Man, by Birmingham, on the morning of yesterday week, and were immediately conveyed to the Midland Hotel, Derby. It was arranged that those clergymen and gentlemen of the town and neighbourhood who might desire to pay a last tribute of esteem and affection to the late bishop, should assemble at the hotel at 11 o'clock on that morning; the intention being to for a procession, and accompany the funeral cortege through the limits of the borough, on its way to the family vault at Shirley. Accordingly, soon after that hour a considerable number attended, comprising about forty clergymen, and many influential laymen. The shop along the route were – with one or two insignificant exceptions – wholly closed during the time the funeral passed. The procession moved in the following order:—The Beadle of All Saints.

During the passing of the funeral procession through Langley and Brailsford, the shops were closed, as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Bishop; and, on its arrival at Shirley, a large concourse of persons assembled in the churchyard to witness the mournful ceremony. At the vicarage at Shirley, a number of clergymen from Ashbourn and other places in the neighbourhood joined the procession, and accompanied it to the church, which was clothed in black.Clergy of the town of Derby and neighbourhood.

The burial service was read in an exceedingly impressive and feeling manner by the Lord Bishop of Lichfield, after which the remains of the deceased Prelate were interred in the family vault.
