Derby Mercury - 23 August 1771

DERBY Aug 22.
Friday last a most audacious fraud was committed in the following manner, viz.— One Roger Dakin, coming from Ashbourne fair, was overtaken on Shirley Common, by a well dressed man, who asked to purchase the mare he rode on; and thirteen guineas be fixed on as price, he paid him all counterfeit ones, which the said Roger Dakin refused; but another gentleman-like man, (supposed to be an accomplice) coming up, and assuring him they were good, he put them in his pocket, and the man rode off with the mare. The guineas are all George II. and the date, 1759.
