SHIRLEY

Death of an Old Resident.— On the 14th inst., an old and respected inhabitant of this parish was laid to rest in Shirley churchyard, in the person of Mr. Abraham James, who had resided in the village for many years. About a fortnight before his death, the deceased, who was 76 years of age, went to pay a visit to his married daughter at New Whittington, near Chesterfield. While there he was seized with pneumonia, and passed away on the 9th inst. The funeral, as already stated, took place at Shirley, the vicar (the Rev. R. E. Coates) officiating. The mourners were Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Bird, Mrs Sept on (daughters), Mr. F. James, Mr. W James (sons), and Mr. Thompson and Mr. Bird (son-in-laws). The remains were Interred in the the same grave as those of his wife, who predeceased him by about 11 years, and the body was borne to its last resting place by his old friends and neighbours.— Messrs. W. Wheeldon, G. Gilman, T. Gilman, T. Hough, G. Coxon, J. Maskrey, W. Harpur, and W. Stubbs. Floral tributes were sent by members of the family, also Mrs. Mellor and family, Mr. and Mrs F. Harrison, and Mr. and Mrs. W. Harper.
