The services at the parish church on Easter Day were very bright and beautiful. The alter was beautified with white lillies. Appropriate sermons were preached by the vicar, and the choir rendered the anthem, "He is risen," in good style.The vestry meeting was held in the schoolroom on Easter Monday evening, and was well attended. The wardens' accounts for the last year were audited and found correct. The best thanks of the meeting were given to the retiring wardens, messrs. W. Wheeldon and G. Frost, who have had more than the usual responsibility and labour over the last year. They were both re-elected, and agreed to accept office for another year. Several proposals were made with regard to the improvement of the church fabric and the churchyard. In the latter case it was decided to "wire" the gates &c., to exclude poultry, to lay more gravel on the paths, and to mow the grass three times a year. The meeting closed with a vote of thanks to the vicar for presiding.
The series of lessons in dressmaking which, under the auspices of Derbyshire County Council, have been given in the village during the last twelve weeks, came to an end on April 7th. The class has not been quite as successful in point of numbers as was anticipated, but the work done by the pupils has been highly creditable, and testifies to the efficiency of Miss Smith's teaching. At the close of the last lesson Miss Owen, on behalf of the pupils, thanked Miss Smith for the pains she had taken over the class, and expressed the hope that they might at some future date enjoy a second course and lessons under the same tuition.
