ASHBOURN.
At the police station, on Monday, before the Rev. E. E. Morris, James Holmes, cattle dealer, was charged with stealing 19s. 9d., the property of Mr Yates, a farmer, of Shirley, on the 11th inst.— According to the evidence of Mr. George Wain, the prosecutor was attending a farm sale at Shirley on Thursday, where witness was supplying refreshments on behalf of Mr. Mellor, of the Saracen's Head. Mr Yates called for a drink, and placed a sovereign down, and the witness placed the change (19s. 9d.) close to the glass containing the liquor. A minute or two after the prosecutor enquired for the money, and was told it had been put down before him. Enquiries were then made, and it was stated that the prisoner was seen to pick up the change and hurriedly leave the place. He was traced to Derby and arrested there on Saturday.— He was now remanded in custody till Thursday.
