SHIRLEY
At a meeting held in the school room, on Monday, the vicar being chairman, it was decided to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee on June 22, by providing a tea for the women and children, and a dinner for the men if funds allow, any surplus being devoted to the improvement of the church heating apparatus. A committee of ten members was appointed to carry out the arrangements. the vicar brought forward the plan for having bonfires on the night of June 22nd throughout the country, and it was adopted.© British Newspaper Archive
