THE RECEIVER WORSE THAN THE THIEVES.— Henry Gilman and William Goodall, both of Shirley, farm lads, were charged with stealing a bushel of brewer's grains, the property of Mr. Robert Goodall, their master, on the 7th December; and Thomas Lane, of the Dog and Partridge Inn, was charged with receiving the grains well knowing they had been stolen.— It appeared that the two lads were charging grains from Ashbourne Station, when Lane asked them to fill a bag for him, and he gave them some beer for the grains.— All the defendants pleaded guilty, and Gilman and Goodall were both fined 5s. and 13s. costs; but the Justices considered Lane more to blame than the lads, and sent him to prison for one month with hard labour without the option of fine.
