CHURCH OF ENGLAND TEMPERANCE SOCIETY.— Two sermons in connection with the above society were preached on Sunday last by the Rev. C. W. G. Corfield, M. A., rector of Heanor. It seems that the Shirley branch of the C.E.T.S. has begun its winter campaign in a manner which augurs well for vigorous and successful work in the future. A few weeks ago an open air demonstration and tea took place at the vicarage, which was well attended by members of the Band of Hope. Last week the Reading-room and Working Men's Club were successfully opened, and several new members were enrolled.
RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH.— The restoration of the south aisle of the church is almost completed, and the whole fabric appears to be greatly improved. Unfortunately, the North aisle and chancel are to remain untouched, owing to the lack of funds. We learn that a late vicar of the parish, the Rev. E. W. Michell, has rendered a great assistance by collecting a considerable sum of money. Additional subscribers are— messers. J. Fernyhough, R. Cresswell, J. Gillman, T. Mellor, Wm. Daykin, and others.
