Derby Mercury - 4 September 1735
This is to give NOTICE,
THAT on Wednesday, the 10th of this instant, September, there will be a match run on Shirley Common near Ashburn, three heats for five guineas a heat; betwixt Mr. Redfern's Lady-legs, and Mr. Roberts's Cripple, to carry seven stone the lowest.And that on Thursday, the 11th of this instant, at the same place, there will be a purse of five guineas, to be run for by any any horse, mare or gelding, that never won above that value (matches excepted) fourteen hands high, to carry nine stone, and to give or take, higher or lower; and to be entered on Tuesday, the ninth instant, at the market cross in Ashburn, betwixt the hours of two and six in the afternoon; to pay five shillings entrance each horse, the stakes for the second best. Three to start or no purse.
N.B. There will be other bye races, and a ball at night for the ladies.
