SHIRLEY. RESTORATION OF THE CHURCH, The new vicar of Shirley, the Rev. Claude Corfield, M.A., has soon began to carry out the work which was projected by his esteemed and reverend father the late vicar, and the much needed repair of this ancient church has now been begun. The beautiful old masonry-work was in many places choked up with unsightly mortar, while the roof and windows were in a very bad state. The church is now undergoing a thorough overhauling, and much good work is being done. We note that the following are among the principal subscribers:— Sir Stafford Northcote, Bart., M.P., the Hon. E. Coke. Mr. T. W, Evans, MP., Mr. Wm. Cox, J.P., the Vicar, Messrs. J. Jackson, W. Mason, Rev. W. Sandford , and Mr. Henry Wright. Further funds were raised by a bazaar held in the spring, but we learn that much more money is still needed."District News." Derby Mercury 26 Sept. 1883. 19th Century British Newspapers.
