The Rev. WILLIAMSON RICHARDSON LINTON died on January 4 at his residency, Shirley Vicarage, Derby, aged 57, after an illness which began on Christmas Eve. From Repton School he went to Christ Church College, Oxford, and after a distinguished career for his degree, he gained the Denyer and Johnson theological scholarship in 1875, and subsequently the Hall and Houghton senior Septuagint prize. He was ordained to the curacy of St. Paul's, Upper Holloway, in 1874, and mas tutor at the C.M.S. College at Islington from 1877 to 1888, where he was greatly beloved by all the students. In 1886 he became vicar of Shirley in the diocese of Southwell, where he had laboured for the last 21 years, and where his manly and upright character commanded the respect of his parishioners. He was a diligent student both of theology and of science. Botany was his chief study, and in this science he was an authority of European reputation. He had formed a large and very valuable collection of the flora of the British Isles, and was the author of the Flora of Derbyshire and British Hieracia. He was the youngest surviving son of the late Canon Henry Linton, of Stirtloe-house, in Hunts, who for many year was rector of St. Peter le Bailey, Oxford. He married, in 1887, the eldest daughter of the late Rev. Walter Waddington Shirley, D.D., Canon of Christ Church, and Professor of ecclesiastical history in the University of Oxford.
