Brick and Tile Works

Located between Rough Lane and Shirley Bridge. On the "OS six inch (1881-1913) map of the village" it appears to consist of seven buildings with the brick kiln and clay pits to the north. Tony Taylor remembers the kiln as being of the bottle type.

Also, according to Tony, there was a marl pit on Brick Kiln Lane and clay pits on the other side of Painter's Lane.

It was owned by the Osmaston Estate. The Masons of Shirley Common were brick makers on the 1861, 1871 and 1881 censuses.

The OS 1:25,000, 1937-1961 marks the clay pit as unused.
